MindSet Tips

Healing is hard work. It is as much a mental game as a physical one.

Here are some of my favorite tips and tricks and ideas for keeping your head in the game as you grow and heal.

  • If you want something you’ve never had before, you have to be willing to do something you’ve never done before.

  • Your body is a miracle of biochemistry. Know this, trust this. It is already working so hard for you. Love it for its ability to be alive.

  • Practice gratitude. Daily. Everyday.

  • Use technology to help remind you to be focused and stay present. Set an alarm for taking breaks or to do deep breathing. Or connect with an app like Headspace to help you learn how to meditate.

  • Your brain habituates to the environment that you put it in on a regular basis. If you are stressed, hurried, anxious and unhappy all the time, the brain will create this even when the external environment is not stressful.

  • Practice being calm.

  • Take a moment to remember what it feels like to be happy and then practice creating that feeling on your own throughout the day.

  • Know that you are worth it and that you deserve to be happy and healthy.

  • If others are awful toward you, know that that is more about their own issues and struggles than yours. Don’t absorb their negativity. It has nothing to do with you. Cultivate compassion for them, because you know how painful it must be for them to be unhappy and struggling.

  • Let go of perfection. Perfect doesn’t exist.

  • Focus on how things feel physically in your body. Notice what physical sensations happen when you are happy, or stress, or worried, or anxious. Just notice. No need to try to change.

  • Every moment you have a choice. If you don’t like the choice you made earlier, not to worry, you’ll have another opportunity to make a different choice in another moment.

  • Explore how you may be getting in your own way. Often self sabotaging behaviors are fueled by a desire to remain hidden, to stay safe, to not want to fail, or generally out of fear. Then ask yourself what that scared part of you needs to feel safe.

  • Change can be hard. It’s ok.

  • Anything is possible.

  • Banish the words “I can’t” and “I won’t” from your vocabulary. Replace with “I choose not to…” and see how that feels.

  • If you are feeling overwhelmed by responsibilities, implement strong boundaries between yourself and the rest of the world. The world will always ask more of you. Make your choice about what you will give it.

  • Don’t do work after work hours.

  • Trust in the process. Surrender and let go of the things that are not serving you.

  • Have no shame. Being a human is messy, complex, conflicted and - above all - beautiful.

Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
